Tree Removal Permits
Many of the jurisdictions around the metro Atlanta area require permits to remove a tree. Each jurisdiction has its own requirements and some are more strict than others in enforcement. Even though we may not like it, requiring tree removal permits is actually a good idea.
For example, too many homeowners move into a new house and instantly want to cut down trees because they feel like they’re dangerous. They failed to take into consideration that the trees have been there often times 60 to 100 years and have not Fallen yet. However, because they’re not used to them, they instantly want to cut them down. The problem is as people move back and forth every few years, really old trees continually get removed resulting in a barren landscape that none of us wants.
By mandating tree removal permit enforcement, it helps to curb sporadic or spur-of-the-moment decisions to remove trees. Over the long run this will help maintain the density of the Atlanta Urban Forest canopy.
